Types of Foundations in House Construction
Home is a perennial dream for millions of people. Not only a man’s or woman’s hard-earned money, but his or her life itself is investing in this. But, even if a person is financially well off, there are a lot of hurdles in realizing a home from procurement of land to housewarming. Among them, one major concern is choosing the kind of foundation which is apt for your house. The best way to choose this is to seek professional advice from a structural engineer. Let’s go through the types of foundations for house in Kochi. There are mainly two factors that determine the type of foundation. They are the approximate weight of the proposed building and the strata. The approximate weight constitutes the weight of the total floors plus the weight of the slabs with the loads. The strata denote the nature of the soil underground. By testing the soil, we come to know the soil behavior which etches out the characteristics like density, moisture content, and presence of organic matter. The different types of foundations for house in Kochi are:
1. Rubble Foundation
Rubble foundation is a simple foundation process done from earlier times. For this, a 2 feet trench is made on the ground and hard rock or rubble is placed tightly without any gap. Based on soil condition, sometimes the soil is filled between the rubbles. For even strong foundation rubble packed with cement is used. Over the rubble structure, the basement is made which must cover a proportionally smaller area than the rubble layer. Usually, a concrete belt is provided over the rubble foundation for further protection of the building.
2. Pillar Footing Foundation
A pillar footing foundation is not usually used for small buildings but for high-rise buildings only. Here corners of the walls are provided with pillars and concrete footing at the bottom of each pillar.
How about heavier houses, say ones with more than two floors? Pillar Footing Foundation is ideal for such high-rise buildings. In this type of foundation, pillars are provided on the corners of the walls, and footing (made of concrete) is given on the bottom of each pillar. This is done to distribute the whole weight of the pillar evenly to the ground using a larger area. After finishing the footing, these pillars are connected to make the plinth beam, which will take the load of walls. For roofing, more beams are used to hold the weight of the concrete slab.
3. Raft Foundation
A raft foundation is used in loose soil or marshy land. Here the soil needs to be strengthened by a process called sand piling. Sand is pushed by pressure below the loose soil layer and is tightened to hold the heavy load. The basement is constructed entirely of concrete below the walls.
4. Piling or Pile Foundation
If the soil is of the least quality, piling should be done by digging and inserting materials to make it strong. Pile foundation is of two types,
Under Reamed Piles
In Under Reamed Piles or friction piles, holes are dug, side walls are made stronger with chemicals, steel rods are inserted into these holes, and concrete is added. The friction produced by the side walls of the hole and the surface area of the pile make the pile strong.
DMC Piles
In DMC piles, the rock under the soil holds the rock on its top, by piercing the land. The pile is anchored to the pierced rock and steel structure, to be concreted is to be inserted
Here, every corner of the room is piled and all piles are connected by a large beam called a grade beam to distribute the load between the piles. Walls are constructed over the grade beams.
All foundation types are best in their ways depending on the soil and geographical conditions, apart from the nature of the building. The ultimate aim of any foundation is to withstand the load of the building.
